Barbie Doll

February 28, 2013 in Poetry, Teen Troubles

By Marge Piercy
This girlchild was born as usual and presented dolls that did pee-pee and miniature GE stoves and irons and wee lipsticks the color of cherry candy.
Then in the magic of puberty, a classmate said: You have a great big nose and fat legs. … She was healthy, tested intelligent, possessed strong arms and back, abundant sexual drive and manual dexterity. She went to and fro apologizing.
Everyone saw a fat nose on thick legs. She was advised to play coy, exhorted to come on hearty, exercise, diet, smile and wheedle.
Her good nature wore out like a fan belt. So she cut off her nose and her legs and offered them up.
In the casket displayed on satin she lay with the undertaker’s cosmetics painted on, a turned-up putty nose, dressed in a pink and white nightie.
Doesn’t she look pretty? everyone said. Consummation at last.
To every woman a happy ending.

  1. Wonderful Blog! You would look great in crop tops and crew necks from Hipster Tops Teen store

  2. Unfortunately, people in todays society have this make believe thing called perfection. Nobodies perfect (cheesy hannah montana quote there) everyone has problems and insecurities, and society being the wonderful thing it is… puts pressure on people to change the way they are or look. Some people need to wake up and accept people for who they are. x bella

  3. People. Life should never be thought of as fun, even in this technologically advanced society!! Like climbing the Academic or Social mountains, it will always be a struggle until you learn the rules and facts underlying each! If you don’t get to the bottom of each situation, you will continually feel disheartened and low! It will take commitment and a strong effort to learn and present those “Laws” into the situation of concern! Lastly, when you dedicate yourself, you will feel better naturally, without having to undergo pain and discomfort! Good Luck in your new task…TWA

  4. People.. When you learn the rules of both Academic and Social success, and then implement them, you can be sure of progress in the areas of concern! Life is no pleasant journey for those who expect life to be “Fun” and “Joyful!” It will take a strong commitment in discovering the “Tough” facts of life, but once you remain in that line of thought, progress is a “GIVEN,” and you will be better-off, and tougher for it! Some situations in life can be very tough for those who will not, or cannot accept the fact that life is not going to be to their liking quite a bit of the time! No-one likes to view the potentially harmful realities, but once you do, and try to make them livable, you are on the right track! Jobs & Money are but one reality, but there are many you must concentrate on that could be harmful if you are not ready to meet them! You must go far beyond what the average parent conveyed to you! Get started now! Good Life to You…TWA

  5. My everyday struggle. Not being good enough to even please myself..

  6. Life is always a struggle, and should never be referred to as fun. I see everything in life as a learning experience. I went from a spoiled little army brat to living in a homeless shelter . Everything happens for a reasons, and we have the build on those experiences. What you said was “Beautiful”. Nobody is perfect, we are basically made of imperfections. You have a way with words, Good luck with your next task in life, i will be rooting for you !

  13. This is a beautiful post, extremely artistic! I know as a female in our modern society, you get judged and tormented for not having the perfect body type. Plus, as a child being bullied is nothing to take lightly. You have a real talent in writing!!

  14. These days I don’t know my place; I can walk down the hallways and not get noticed. What did I do to have this feeling inside, I know I’m mean but that’s because I get hurt so easily. I’m never happy but I fake it, so nobody will ask questions.

  15. I think this is a post that every girl can relate to as we are constantly judged by society’s ideals. In the end, I realized that society’s expectation of what a girl should look like can turn into a obsession that has no ending if we don’t learn to accept ourselves the way we are
